Air fryers are great kitchen appliances as they can cook food in a fraction of the time, so it's no surprise that they're becoming more popular. But are they loud?

The most common complaint some people have about their air fryers is that they're noisy. The main reason for this is that a fan inside circulating hot air around food makes noise. It's not like a standard oven, which has a single heating element and no fan.

In this guide, I'll discuss how air fryers are loud, how much noise they make, and how to reduce their noise.

Key Takeaways

  • All air fryers are not equally made: there are some models that are quieter or louder than others
  • An air fryer is loud if the fan inside is working harder to move the hot air around the cooking chamber so that food can be cooked evenly
  • The noise level of an air fryer is one of the most important factors to consider when buying one. A noisy cooker can be annoying and distracting, especially if you're planning on using it in your kitchen when others are around.
  • I measured the sound level of my air fryer when it was cooking with a sound level meter app or decibel meter. This was to determine the noise level of an average air fryer; I found it quieter than my microwave
  • As with any other appliance, there are some things that you can do to reduce the noise level of your air fryer and they include replacing the noisy fan, etc.

Cooking with Air Fryer

An air fryer is a small countertop appliance that uses hot air to cook your food. It's usually about the size of a large toaster oven and has a basket for putting food in.

They also come with a variety of features like timers, temperature settings, and other options that make it easy to cook just about anything; from chicken wings to homemade French fries.

Are Air Fryers Loud

No, air fryers are not loud. If you’re looking to buy one, you may be wondering how loud they are and if they can distract you while watching TV. Fortunately, the noise level of air fryers varies depending on Brand and model hence it’s important to check the product specs before purchasing one.

Some Models Are Quieter or Louder Than Others

The best ones are quiet enough that you won’t even notice them while cooking dinner or watching TV. Others can get pretty loud, especially when they start getting hot after being used for a while.

How Loud Is an Air Fryer?

The average noise level of an air fryer is between 40 decibels (quiet office level) to 60 dBA decibels (conversation noise). This means that the noise the air fryer makes is comparable to a normal conversation level at around 60 dB.

How Do I Know How Loud an Air Fryer Is?

I Did Some Tests using A Noise Meter When my Air Fryer was Cooking Food

To test how loud an air fryer is, I used a sound level meter app on my phone. The app I used is called Decibel Meter, which is available for both Android and iOS users.

I took measurements from two different places: at a distance from the unit and directly next to it.  Mine was 50 decibels from a distance and 55 decibels when near it.  A decibel (dB) is a unit used to measure sound intensity or loudness, which means that the lower the number, the less intense the noise will be for you.

I also tested the sound levels of several air fryers that my neighbors own and found that they were all between 60 and 70dB, which is around the same volume as an ordinary conversation at home or at work (between 60-70dB).

Research

I read a research paper online of people that measured different noise levels of air fryers. They tested the noise levels in decibels (dB) and recorded their findings.

They tested 3 different types of air fryers and found that the average noise level was between 50-60 dB.

The results were as follows:

Philips HD9240/91- 54 dB

Traditional Air Fryer -65 dB

Morphy Richards 231118 Air Fryer-75 dB

The quietest air fryer was the Philips HD9240/91 which has a maximum noise output of 54 decibels (dB). This is equivalent to a quiet conversation in a restaurant or library.

The loudest was the Morphy Richards 231118 which had a maximum noise level of 75 dB. It is equivalent to someone shouting in your ear from 3 feet away (1 meter).

Are Air Fryers Generally Not Loud

Air fryers are not loud in comparison to dishwashers and microwaves but they can still be quite loud for some people.

If you have tinnitus or are sensitive to sounds, then you may want to consider buying an air fryer that has a lower noise level. The good news is that most air fryers have a low decibel rating and this makes them more suitable for use in apartments or homes where noise levels are restricted.

Why Is It Important to Know How Loud an Air Fryer Is?

Some people like their kitchen appliances to be as quiet as possible so they don't disturb other family members or neighbors when they're using them.

Others don't mind a little noise and actually prefer it because they think it means their average air fryer is working harder.

Why Is My Air Fryer So Noisy?

Some people find that their air fryers start making strange noises after a while of use. This could be due to poor quality parts inside or maybe just poor cleaning habits by previous owners.

However, if you take care of your air fryer then it should last longer than just one year before starting to make strange noises.

Fan Rotating

Air fryers are full of technology that helps you cook healthier meals. A standard air fryer will come with a rotating fan to circulate hot air around the food as it cooks.

That’s why your fries turn out crispy, your chicken wings look like they were cooked in a deep fryer and your steak comes out perfectly browned on the outside and tender on the inside.

But sometimes, that rotating air fryer fan can get loud. And that can be annoying if you’re using an air fryer in your kitchen while everyone else is trying to watch TV or have dinner together.

Dirty Appliance

Cleaning an appliance properly will ensure that all the parts inside get cleaned properly and don't get clogged up with food debris over time which could lead to them breaking down sooner than expected or causing your air fryer to overwork and cause it to make more noise.

How Can I Make My Air Fryer Quieter?

Changing Air Fryer Fan

You can make your air fryer quieter by changing the loud fan. You can usually find replacement fans online or at local hardware stores. You can change the fan by yourself or take it to a repair shop.

Once you have replaced your fan, try using your air fryer again and see if it works better now that there isn't as much noise coming from inside of it.

Buy A New Air Fryer

You can also buy a new air fryer if you have an old one that is making a loud noise. Air fryers are generally very affordable appliances, so replacing one shouldn't set you back very much money at all.

By simply buying a new air fryer from brands like Conair or Philips, you can get something that won't make as much noise while cooking your food.
